Anal Gland Surgery

Overview

The anal sacs are two small glands that sit either side of the anus under the tail. They produce a strong-smelling secretion which is emptied when your animal passes faeces (stools). Problems arise when this emptying process does not occur naturally and the secretions build up in the sac, causing obvious discomfort to your pet. Although anal gland disease is most commonly seen in dogs, it can also affect cats.

Reasons for this procedure

If your dog requires their anal glands to be manually emptied on a regular basis then further investigation is warranted. Problems with the anal sacs include impaction, inflammation or abscessation and can cause agitation and discomfort to your pet.

Surgery

If your pets anal gland problems prove difficult to manage conservatively then they maybe referred to our surgeons for further assessment. Occasionally, additional tests are warranted which may include imaging, blood and urine samples for analysis. The results of these will dictate the best treatment options for your pet and these will be discussed in full with your vet.

If surgery is necessary then our team of soft tissue surgeons will perform an anal sacculectomy. This procedure involves the removal of one or both anal glands through small incisions in the skin. This is a permanent procedure that should provide relief for your pet.

Most pets can be discharged on the same day of surgery. Our team will ensure that appropriate medication is dispensed so that your pet is comfortable at home and that you are fully informed on the recovery process and follow-up appointments to aid in a full recovery.
